THE REGION

- Costa de Almeria is a privileged region because there is not a massive development of buildings, because environmental impacts are moderate, and many areas of the coast are still virgin, as well as most of them are protected by the Nature Reserve.

- SOCIO-ECONOMIC FEATURES. The eastern coast of Almeria has a low population density (31 habs/km2). Its 71 000 inhabitants are distributed over an area of 2 257 km2. Centres of population have a small number of people, usually they do not exceed 6 000 inhabitants, but Huercal-Overa (about 13 000 inhabitants).
The rugged relief that sinks into the Mediterranean sea, also have peaceful coves, secluded beaches, wide white sand beaches, some of them with dunes, all very charming and beautiful.

East coast of Almeria.

From the south of Mojacar to the north of Vera, the coastal line is beach most of the time, and some stretches are not developed. Between Cuevas del Almanzora and Pulpi, the coast is more discontinued. Between Mojácar and Turre we find Sierra Cabrera mountains, a relief of limestones with abundant vegetation due to several sources of water that we can find there, which make this place a very charming area for countryside tourism, as well as it is near to the seaside.

In the interior, gypsum, marls and limestones have caused a karstic scenery, where we can find different shapes, as the Rio Aguas canyon, and many caves where we can see the unusual shapes that gypsum can take when water evaporates. That is why this area has been classified as Natural Site and the love to speleology has been favoured, which has become a tourist resource.

Throughout the region we can find many other cultural resources, like the archaeological remains of El Argar and Arabic marks on the popular architecture.

CLIMATE

Almería has more hours of sunshine per year than everywhere in Spain, about 3000. It has an annual average temperature of 18/19ºC, and on the winter its waters are warmer than the air, which invite to swim.

Almeria has a subtropical/Mediterranean climate, warm and dry. In Almería, the sky is always clear and sunny.

Thanks to its wonderful climate and a wide range of cultural, leisure and sport activities, Almeria is an excellent place to live or to spend wonderful holidays enjoying its beaches or the activities we can practise there, such as cultural visits to its historic and artistic heritage, environments and landscapes, or caves of important cultural interest.
